Feb 6: A Facebook user will know very well how easy it is to create a new account. There are many who have multiple accounts. We have seen many creating Facebook accounts to prank their friends, because they forgot or lost their passwords of their blog account and the like.
Many of these accounts might not be even in use but still exist. But there are some accounts which had been created just to spam other users.
The latest annual report of Facebook reveals that the 10% of their worldwide MAUs (Monthly Active Users) represent fake or duplicate accounts. They also disclosed that the when compared to the developed markets, rising markets such as India and Indonesia hold the highest percentage of duplicate accounts.
Earlier Facebook took pride in having 2.13 billion monthly active users. With the latest annual report, around 200 million users will make the 10% of the 2.13 billion monthly active users. But this does not make it legit that the 200 million accounts are fake/ duplicate.
These 200 million accounts include those made for pets and the accounts that are misclassified. Figuring out which of the accounts are fake and which are real is difficult and thus the 200 million accounts we are talking about might not be wholly duplicate accounts.
