RBI Moots Doorstep Banking Facility for Differently-abled and Senior Citizens

Nov 10: The apex bank has lined up efforts to make available banking services seamlessly to all citizens of the country by offering banking facilities for differently-abled persons at their doorsteps. The doorstep banking will also be made available for those above 70 years of age.

The plan is to implement doorstep banking by December this year. The Reserve Bank of India has already sent out a note to banks, and it has cited Section 23 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, saying that “in view of the difficulties faced by senior citizens of more than 70 years of age and differently abled or infirm persons (having medically certified chronic illness or disability) including those who are visually impaired, banks are advised to make concerted effort to provide basic banking facilities, such as pick up of cash and instruments against receipt, delivery of cash against withdrawal from account, delivery of demand drafts, submission of Know Your Customer (KYC) documents and Life certificate at the premises/ residence of such customers.”

A BS report today said that the RBI has also asked banks in the country to provide a dedicated counter offering priority to senior citizens and differently-abled citizens to make banking services hassle free for them.
