Feb 1: Indian public sector telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) has partnered with carmaker Tata Motors, in a unique machine-to-machine (M2M) communications deal.
As per the deal, BSNL will provide Tata Motors with embedded SIM cards which will transform the company’s vehicles to smart cars. The partnership, according to a report, would look at embedding SIM functionality for smart cars. BSNL has already provided five lakh SIM cards and is set to supply 10 lakh SIM cards in a year.
It is expected that a sale of 50 million M2M SIM cards would be recorded. The upcoming 5G technology is also liekly to be deployed in the automobile and home automation sectors.
With the SIM cards from BSNL, the carmaker will be able to convert its vehicles Tiago, Hexa and the newly unveiled SUV Harrier into smart cars by the year 2020.
With M2M technology, wired and wireless communications can be done using sensors and applications. Smart transportation, smart cities, smart grids, smart homes, and smart healthcare are some of the new-age infrastructure projects where the M2M technology can be used.
The subscriber count of BSNL hovers around 113 million. The telecom industry has become quite competitive and thus the state-owned company is looking for new opportunities. The Tata deal could be one of these.
With M2M technology, by integrating cars, machines and home appliances a perfect Internet of Things ecosystem can be created. This will also boost the entry of 5G technology.
