Jan 9: Following media reports of leak of Aadhaar demographic data for as little as Rs 500, the Unique Identificaiton Authority of India (UIDAI) has withdrawn the privileges to designated officers to access information from the database.
Meanwhile, a staff research paper of Institute for Development and Research in Banking Technology (IDRBT) has raised concern about the safety of Aadhaar database.
The paper said that the primary challenge was to protect the data from the prying eyes of the corporate world who wanted it for marketing promotion and profit seeking.
The other major challenge is to protect the biometric based system from cyber criminals as it is an important national asset.
Hacking of Aadhaar data can have crippling effect on Indian business and administration and cost benefit analysis presents a mixed picture as only time will tell whether the benefits overweigh the costs.
