Sep 27: The Indian car manufacturer, Mahindra & Mahindra is all set to launch its first electric SUV. The company is expected to unveil the electric version of the Mahindra KUV100 in 2019. Reports suggested that it will take time for the electric version of larger SUVs such as Mahindra XUV500 and Scorpio to be launched, but the KUV100 e vehicle would arrive as planned.

It is believed that the electric version of the Mahindra XUV500 will need a huge investment and may not be justifiable at the moment. Thus the E-version of the vehicle will take time. In order to manufacture the e-version of the vehicle, the carmaker will need powerful electric motors and big battery packs. Expensive electric has a low demand in the market and it does not look practical to develop and market such vehicles at this time.

Veejay Ram Nakra, Chief of Sales and Marketing (Automotive Division) at M&M was quoted by reports as saying that, while considering the larger SUVs the economic difficulties which the company will have to face also pops up. He went on to say that the KUV will be the first electric SUV offered by the company.

If the electric version of Mahindra KUV100 is marketed well, it stands a chance to be a huge success as it will be the first such model to get into the electric terrain at a genuine price. M&M’s first electric SUV, KUV100 electric was unveiled at the Auto Expo 2018 which was held in February. The official launch of the vehicle in the market will be done in 2019.

Currently, Mahindra sells e20 Plus and e-Verito along with the e-Supro, the company’s last mile connectivity solution in its electric vehicle segment. The upcoming electric SUV is expected to make a huge impact for the manufacturer as it will turn out to be the first mainstream small crossover to feature an electric powerplant.

A 72-volt LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery pack which produces a maximum power output of 30 kW (40.2 hp) fuels the Mahindra KUV100 electric. On a full charge of the battery, the SUV is expected to have a driving range of 120km. The vehicle has a top speed of 100 kmph. The pricing of the car is not yet revealed.
