Marc 8: Indian e-commerce giant Flipkart is all is all set to establish an integrated logistics park in Bengaluru, and is gearing up to make it the largest of its kind in the country. News sources revealed that the company has acquired 100 acres of land to set up the logistics park, which will house multiple massive warehouses that could put up a competition for the ones set up by Amazon in the US and Alibaba in China.
The park which will act as a logistic hub across the four south Indian states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh, will help Flipkart strengthen the company’s warehouses in and around Bengaluru. As per the details revealed, in a few years, the park will house 4.5 million square feet of warehousing space.
Amitesh Jha, Vice president and head of Flipkart’s logistics arm, eKart, has been quoted as saying that the investment will be the largest of all made by the company, and it will include land acquisition and the facilities to be built. The exact investment figure on the logistics park has not been revealed. A scale of 4.5 million square feet of space will be required to build a warehouse to serve Bangalore city which will help the company develop logistics ecosystem in various ways.
According to Flipkart, the logistics park will reduce the cost of logistics by uniting with the various other players in the ecosystem at the same time will help deliver the products to the customers faster. With the location of the park yet to be finalized, it is reported that by mid 2019 the park will have 1.5 square feet of warehousing space.
The park will also open a huge job opportunities which will be of about 5000 direct employees and will also open indirect employ opportunities for around 15,000 people by 2020.
The current largest e-commerce warehouse in India is that of Amazon, and it covers up to 400,000 feet in Telangana. Usually the e-commerce warehouses in India span around 100,000 square feet.
Besides the warehouses, the unit will also have transportation hub and sorting centre. The company will continue its expansion in various other regions with small fulfillment centers even though it is building a large logistics park. Presently, the company has around 21 centers spread throughout nine regions in India. In a year’s time, the company plans to expand itself to around 25 regions in India.
