May 8: Two airlines from the country have made it to the top five among the list of cheapest international airlines in the world. According to the report released by Australian multi-modal transport search engine Rome2rio, Air India Express offers the second cheapest rates on international air tickets, while IndiGo has come fifth in the list of cheapest international tickets.
AirAsia X was ranked the cheapest carrier in the world, offering flight travel for rates as cheap as Rs 4.7/km. Second cheapest Air India Express offered tickets at Rs 5.4/km on an average. Other carriers from India also managed to stand among the top in the list. While Jet Airways stood 12th in the list, state-run Air India stood right behind at 13th.
IndiGo also managed to maintain a solid spot in the list of cheapest domestic airlines with a ranking of 15 among cheapest domestic carriers. AirAsia India stood at 18th in the list, while GoAir was placed at 20th in the list. Vistara and Spece Jet were respectively placed at 29th and 30th in the list.
The list was compiled from around 200 airlines, analysing the economic –class airfares of these airlines from the months of January and February this year, as displayed on Rome2rio. The average cost per km across the full list stood at 18.8 US cents, up from 17.75 US cents in 2016.
The list may although seem counter-intuitive, given the similar rankings of full service airlines and low-cost carriers that are known for pushing aggressive pricing. Apart from the aforementioned, the top-ten list includes Indonesia AirAsia, Primera Air, Ethihad, Ryanair, Qantas, WOW Air, and Virgin Australia.
